Port Susan Snow Goose & Birding Festival

The 8th Annual Festival - February 23 & 24, 2013

Port Susan Snow Goose & Birding Festival > What to Bring - the essentials and a few fun things

________________________________________________________________________

Clothing:
  • Rain Gear - We are trying to schedule perfect weather, but just in case bring something to keep you dry if it rains.
  • Hat/Cap - Always a must have. Helps to keep you head dry, warm and the sun out of your eyes. It possible bring one that will keep you head dry.
  • Jacket - Its best to bring several light jackets that you can "layer" instead of one heavy jacket. Possibly the most popular combination is a fleece jacket and a rain jacket to go over that.
  • Foot Gear - Water proof is best, but if you don't have them bring an extra pair of shoes and socks to change into. Most of the birding areas at the Festival have improved trails.
  • A small back/day pack - This will help keep you things in one place and handy. You won’t be out in the bush overnight or trekking up the Himalayas - so your pack only needs to be large enough to hold a bottle or two of water, some snacks, camera, binoculars, personal items, etc.
  • Misc - Sunglasses, Sunscreen, Kleenex and small personal trash bag. Remember - if you pack it in then you need to pack it out!!

Binoculars:
  • The most common or popular sizes are 7x25, 8x30, 10x40 and 10x50. But any size will help you id birds.

Camera:
  • Bring a camera - any camera!!
  • Some the best photos from past Festivals were taken with a one time use camera picked up on the way to the Festival.
  • Don't take a chance on missing that once in a lifetime photo.

Food:
  • Meals - There are several great eateries to enjoy a meal in the Stanwood/Camano Island area.
  • Snacks - You might bring snacks or energy bars.
  • Water - Regardless of the weather do yourself a favor and bring water. Allow for one bottle of water per person per outing. Ex. 2 people x 2 outings = 4 bottles of water Don’t forget to be “Green”. If you have water bottles bring and use them! - you can fill and refill them at Festival HQ FREE! Bottled water is available for purchase at the Festival HQ just in case yours didn’t make the trip with you.

Bird Book:
  • Journal/List - You don't need anything fancy. Just something you can record the birds you saw. It can be done with as simple as a pocket sized notepad or you can buy a birding log book at the Festival from SnowGoose Bookstore.
  • Bird Id Book - There are several great books that will help you not only identify but also help you find birds.

Geek/Tech Things:
  • GPS - Mark/track you adventure. There are also a large number of GeoCaches in the Stanwood and Camano Island areas.
  • Smart Phone/Tablets - Many newer smartphones have built in “mapping/gps/where am I” apps or at least available. There are several great apps for specifically for birding. See our Tech Birding page for additional information.

Parking Land Use Permits:
  • Please check back for current 2013 information.
